If you're a gamer over 30, there's a good chance you've experienced a completely different version of gaming.

Before digital downloads. Before online matchmaking. Before achievements telling you exactly how much of a game you've completed.

Back then, gaming wasn't necessarily easier.

It was just different.

And there are some things that anyone who grew up gaming in the 80s, 90s or early 2000s will remember instantly.

📼 Blowing Into Cartridges

The game wouldn't load?

Take the cartridge out.

Blow into it.

Put it back in.

Try again.

Did it actually fix anything?

Probably not.

Did we all do it anyway?

Absolutely.

It was basically the first gaming troubleshooting technique.

💾 Memory Cards

Before cloud saves, your progress lived on a tiny piece of plastic.

And you treated that memory card like it contained the secrets to the universe.

Lose it?

Forget it.

Corrupt it?

Your 40-hour save was gone.

There was no "Download your previous save from the cloud."

There was just you staring at the television wondering how you were going to explain this to yourself.

📖 Game Manuals

Remember when games came with actual manuals?

You'd get the game home, open the box and immediately start reading.

Sometimes the manual contained controls.

Sometimes it explained the story.

Sometimes it had artwork and information about the characters.

And sometimes you were sitting there reading it while the game loaded.

Today, the tutorial starts before you've even figured out which button turns the character around.

🎮 Sharing One Controller

Playing multiplayer often meant physically sitting next to your mates.

One controller.

Multiple people.

And an argument over whose turn it was.

"Five minutes."

"Your five minutes have been about half an hour."

"No they haven't."

They absolutely had.

📺 The Family Television

Gaming wasn't always happening on a dedicated gaming monitor.

You had one television.

And somebody else probably wanted to watch it.

"Mum, I'm playing!"

"But your programme is on."

And suddenly you're negotiating like a diplomat.

🕹️ Arcade High Scores

Before global online leaderboards, the arcade was where you proved yourself.

You'd walk past the machine and see someone's initials sitting at the top.

AAA

PHL

GIZ

Whatever they were, they were untouchable.

Until you finally beat the score.

Then everyone needed to know.

💿 Scratched Discs

There was nothing quite like putting your favourite game into the console and hearing...

whirrrrrrrr...

Then nothing.

You took the disc out.

Looked at it.

Cleaned it.

Put it back.

Still nothing.

You'd eventually start treating every disc like a priceless artefact.

📞 Dial-Up Internet

Online gaming eventually arrived...

And so did the sound.

BRRRRRR... KRRRRR... BEEP...

The internet was connecting.

And if somebody picked up the telephone?

Goodbye internet.

Imagine trying to play an online multiplayer game like that today.

🧾 Cheat Codes

There was a time when discovering a cheat code felt like finding forbidden knowledge.

You didn't Google it.

You heard it from a friend.

Or read it in a gaming magazine.

Suddenly you could unlock weapons, characters, levels or completely ridiculous gameplay features.

And if someone told you a cheat existed but refused to tell you the code?

That was basically torture.

📰 Gaming Magazines

Before YouTube and social media, gaming magazines were one of the best ways to discover what was happening.

Reviews.

Previews.

Screenshots.

Cheat codes.

Tips.

And sometimes a demo disc attached to the front.

You'd see a new game and think:

"I NEED THIS."

Then you'd discover it cost £50.

And suddenly you needed to save your birthday money.

💷 Games Costing A Fortune

Buying a new game was an event.

You didn't casually download something during lunch.

You'd save up.

Go to the shop.

Pick up the box.

And carry it home like you'd just purchased the greatest thing ever created.

There was something special about that.

🧬 Gaming Has Changed

Today's gamers have incredible technology.

Massive open worlds.

Online communities.

Digital libraries.

Achievements.

Global leaderboards.

Instant downloads.

Cloud saves.

But there's something about those older gaming experiences that remains special.

Maybe it was the excitement of opening a brand-new game.

Maybe it was playing multiplayer with your mates in the same room.

Maybe it was discovering a secret without looking it up online.

Or maybe it's simply remembering when gaming was something you did after school, at the weekend, or whenever you could convince your parents to let you use the television.

For gamers over 30, those memories aren't just about games.

They're part of our Gaming DNA.

So let's settle this...
